Talking as a couple
How to ask for what you want without creating tension
Asking for what we desire can feel vulnerable. The good news is that there are simple ways to do it with warmth and clarity.
1. Choose the moment
Avoid bringing it up right before or during intimacy, or when one of you is tired or stressed. A walk or a quiet dinner usually works better.
2. Start with the positive
Say what you enjoy first. “I love it when…” opens the door; “You never…” closes it.
3. Speak in the first person
“I would like…” or “I feel good when…” sounds like an invitation, not a criticism.
4. Be specific and kind
Instead of generalities, share one simple, specific idea.
5. Listen to the answer
A request is not a demand. Leave room for your partner to say how they feel, and find a middle ground together.
Asking with tenderness is a way of trusting.
